Typical Japanese melon bread

Melonpan ( Japanese メ ロ ン パ ン , Meronpan ) is a sweet pastry popular in Japan , Taiwan and China .

etymology

Literally translated into German, Melonpan means "melon bread". Meron is a loan word from the English melon , which in Japanese refers to sugar melons , while watermelons are referred to as suika . Pan is in turn a loan word that was introduced during the Japanese-Portuguese contact in the 16th century ( Namban trade ) and is derived from Portuguese pão for "bread".

Manufacturing

It is made from an airy dough that of a thin biscuit - / short crust coated with a grid pattern is produced. Its appearance is supposed to imitate that of a sugar melon. Melonpan originally did not contain melon , but the addition of flavoring or syrup, more rarely the fruit, has recently become popular. There are variants in which the cookie dough contains pieces of chocolate or in which caramel , maple syrup , chocolate or other items are added instead of melon .
