Melrose House (Pretoria)
The Melrose House ( Afrikaans : Melrose-Huis ) is a Victorian- style mansion in the South African capital Pretoria . It's across from Burger Park at 275 Jeff Masemola Street (formerly Jacob Maré Street).
The house was built between 1884 and 1886 by transportation contractor George Jesse Hyse. It was confiscated by the British during the Second Boer War . The British Commander-in-Chief Lord Roberts and his successor Lord Kitchener took up quarters here .
Finally, on May 31, 1902, the peace treaty between the British and the Boers was signed in the dining room of the house . This ended the Second Boer War.
Today there is a museum in Melrose House where you can see original English furniture from the 19th century, porcelain and many other accessories from that time. Furthermore, concerts, exhibitions and other events take place here regularly.
