Chukwuemeka Ike

Vincent Chukwuemeka Ike (born Vincent Ike ; born April 28, 1931 in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North, now Anambra State , Nigeria ; † January 9, 2020 in Nnewi ) was a Nigerian writer and philologist . He became known as the author of short stories , short stories and novels in the English language. In 1999 he also published the novel Anu Ebu Nwa in his native Igbo .

Life

Ike was born in 1931 to Charles Chinwuba Ike and Dinah M. Ike. Chukwuemeka is Igbo and means " God has done great things ". Since 1959 he was married to Adebimpe Olurinsola Ike. They have a son and two grandchildren.

From 1937 to 1939 Chukwuemeka Ike attended the Aro Settlement School in Ndikelionwu, then from 1940 to 1943 the CMS Central School in Ife Ezinihitte in what is now Imo State and in 1944 the CMS Central School in Nnewi. His acquaintance with Chinua Achebe dates back to their time together at Government College, Umuahia , in what is now Abia State , which Chukwuemeka Ike attended from 1945 to 1950. He studied history and English at the University of Ibadan , then called University College and a college of the University of London , then at Stanford University . He completed his studies at the University of Ibadan from 1951 to 1955 with a BA and his studies at Stanford in January 1967 as an MA.

Chukwuemeka Ike has worked at various Nigerian universities in various positions:

  • 1955–1956: Graduate Teacher at Girls' Secondary School (later St. Catharine's) Nkwerre, Orlu
  • 1957–1960: Assistant Registrar, University College, Ibadan
  • 1960–1963: Pioneer Deputy Registrar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka
  • 1963–1967: Registrar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka
  • 1971–1979: Registrar, West African Examinations Council (WAEC)

After leaving the public service, he held the following positions, among others:

  • 1983–1985: Visiting Professor for Creative Writing, University of Jos

In his hometown of Ndikelionwu, Chukwuemeka Ike held the traditional title Eze-Ikelionwu XI.
