Peace of Vereeniging
The Treaty of Vereeniging was concluded on May 31, 1902 in Vereeniging ( Transvaal ) between the British government and the leaders of the Boers . He ended the Second Boer War (1899–1902).
The treaty guaranteed freedom from persecution for the Boer participants in the war and held out the prospect of the transition from military administration to civilian government in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. Afrikaans has been approved as an official language in schools and for court hearings. Self-government became a reality with the establishment of the South African Union in 1910.
The signatories included Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener and Lord Alfred Milner for the British government and, for the Boers, generals Christiaan De Wet , Louis Botha , Koos de la Rey and James Barry Munnick Hertzog .
