The Melvillve Highlands are about 500 m high and icy highlands on Laurie Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It forms the central part of the island between the Pirie Peninsula and the south coast.
The designation made by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1987 is derived from that of Laurie Island by the British navigator James Weddell , who recorded it on a map as Melville Island in 1825 . Namesake is Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville (1771-1851), First Lord of the Admiralty from 1812 to 1827 and from 1828 to 1830.
