Ligaments in the area of the head joints. The membrana tectoria is severed and folded back.

The membrana tectoria is a ligament in the spinal canal around the head joints . It represents the continuation of the longitudinal posterior ligament on the head side. The main strand of the tectoral membrane arises on the back of the body of the second cervical vertebra ( axis ) and runs to the basal part of the occiput . On the side, fibers run into the joint capsule of the first head joint, on the back, fibers pass into the hard meninges (dura mater) of the brain, and deep down, fibers connect with the transverse ligament of the Atlantic . The membrana tectoria has a braking and holding function. It slows down bending and turning movements in the area of the head joints.
