The Museum of the Bellu Manor ( Romanian : Muzeul Conacul Bellu ) in Urlați ( Romania ) is a memorial museum in honor of Baron Alexandru Bellu .

Building history

It was built in the old Romanian style in the middle of the 19th century and served as the residence of the baron family Alexandru Bellu . In 1926, the property was donated to the Romanian Academy . 27 years later, in 1953, the house was made accessible to the general public as a museum and it functioned as a regional museum from 1954 until it was finally included in the Prahova museum complex . The Memorial Museum has belonged to the Prahova State Museum of History and Archeology since 1990 .

The museum shows the possessions of the Bellu family. These include works of decorative art, vases, tools, ethnographic objects, Romanian carpets from the 19th century, rare luxurious bibliophile books, furniture from different eras, Eastern and Far Eastern handicrafts, icons and weapons from the 18th to 19th centuries.

Art collection

Alexandru Bellu also made a name for himself as an art lover and patron. Sever Burada was one of the artists he supported and was even allowed to live with him. The art collection on display includes Japanese prints, icons from the 18th and 19th centuries, paintings by Sever Burada , Pavel Dincovici , Eugen Maximovici , Theodor Aman , rare lithographs by Carol Popp de Szathmáry and bronze sculptures.

The architectural elements of the 17th and 18th centuries are also noteworthy.

The museum is award-winning and the building is one of the most representative mansions of Romanian architecture .
