Urlați [ ˈurlatzʲ ] is a town in Prahova County in Great Wallachia in Romania .

location

Urlați lies in the foothills of the southern part of the Eastern Carpathians . The district capital Ploiesti is located about 20 km to the southwest.

history

Archaeological finds prove the settlement of the area since the Neolithic and the Bronze Age . Urlați was first mentioned in 1515. The place belonged to different Wallachian noble families and lived from agriculture and viticulture. In 1711 the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu held a military camp here. At the end of the 19th century, Urlați was the location of some Romanian army units. Today, alongside agriculture, the textile, construction and food industries are the most important branches of the economy.

population

In 1860 there were 1645 people in Urlați. In 1992 the highest population was registered with 12,309. The 2002 census counted 11,778 inhabitants in Urlați, including 11,589 Romanians and 178 Roma . 7643 people lived in the city proper, the remaining 4000 in the 16 cadastral communities.

traffic

Urlați itself has no rail connection; the Bucharest – Galați line passes the city a few kilometers south ( Cricov station ). There are regular bus connections to Ploiesti .
