Slănic is a small town and a spa town in Prahova County in Great Wallachia in Romania .
Geographical location
Slănic is located in the foothills of the southern part of the Eastern Carpathians on the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 102. The district capital Ploieşti is about 40 km south.
history
Slănic was first mentioned in 1532. Another written testimony from 1685 mentions salt deposits that have been mined since that time. In 1713 the nobleman Mihai Cantacuzino gave the place Slănic with its salt mines to the monastery Colțea in Bucharest. The salt deposits have also been used for medicinal purposes since the 19th century. In 1886 Slănic received the status of a health resort, in 1892 that of a town. After the Second World War, the spa business was intensified.
The main industry of the city is tourism.
population
In 1930 about 6300 people lived in the village, including about 100 Hungarians ; the rest were Romanians . The 2002 census counted 7113 inhabitants, including 7086 Romanians and 23 Roma . About 3000 lived in Slănic itself, the rest in the two incorporated towns.
traffic
Slănic is the end point of a railway line leading from Ploieşti. In November 2007 the traffic between Poiana Slănic and Slănic was interrupted because of a damaged bridge. Repair work is to begin in the course of 2009; this was only completed in summer 2011. Currently (2009) around four local trains run daily to and from Ploieşti. There are also regular bus connections there.
