Azuga is a city in Prahova County in the region Wallachia in Romania .

location

Azuga is located in the upper valley of the Prahova River . The Bucegi Mountains are to the west of the municipality and the Baiu Mountains to the east .

history

Train station in Azuga

The region of the present city was used by herdsmen for a long time. The settlement did not come into existence until around 1800 and thanks to its convenient location on one of the most important Carpathian passes - the Predeal Pass - it grew rapidly. From 1830 industrial companies settled there. In 1879 the place received a railway connection.

In the 20th century, Azuga developed into a tourist destination, with winter sports playing an important role. In 1948 Azuga was declared a city.

population

Due to the development of industry and tourism, the population increased continuously until the revolution of 1989; In 1956 3732 residents were counted, and in 1992 6487 residents. Since then the number of inhabitants has decreased again.

traffic

Azuga is located on the pass road between Bucharest and Brașov , which corresponds to European route 60 . On the western outskirts there is a train station on the Ploieşti – Braşov railway line .

Attractions

Azuga is the starting point for hikes in the Bucegi and Baiu mountains.
