Memory (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Memory (German title memory ) is the most famous song from the musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber . The text is by Trevor Nunn and is based on TS Eliot's poem Rhapsody on a Windy Night .

The song in the musical is sung by Grizabella, the former glamor cat , who is now only a shadow of the self. The song is a nostalgic look back at her past and expresses her desire to start a new life. Memory is sung several times in the musical. When it is sung towards the end of the piece, it marks the turning point and climax of the plot.

Memory (often incorrectly referred to as Memories ) is Lloyd Webber's biggest hit and has been copied and modified many times. Well-known artists who made the song famous are especially Elaine Paige , who sang Grizabella in the original cast of Cats , Barbra Streisand and Barry Manilow . The singer Angelika Milster made the song known in Germany under the title Remembrance . It is also her best known and most popular recording.
