The Memory Iceland Provincial Park is a 0,915-hectare Provincial Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The park is located approximately 23 miles northwest of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley Regional District . It is the smallest of the Provincial Parks in British Columbia , after Seton Portage Historic Provincial Park .

Nearby, on the northwestern shores of Shawnigan Lake , is West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park .

The park is one of the two smallest provincial parks in British Columbia . It is located on an island at the southern end of Shawnigan Lake. The park can only be reached by boat. It is the only one on Vancouver Island that is located on an island in a freshwater lake.
The park is a category II protected area ( national park ).

history

The park is one of the oldest 30 of the BC Provincial Parks still in existence and was established in 1945. His name is intended to commemorate the two sons of a local couple who perished in World War II.

Flora and fauna

Because of the small size of the park, classification into the British Columbia ecosystem is problematic. However, the surrounding parks are assigned to the Eastern Very Dry Maritime Subzone of the Coastal Douglas-fir Zone .

Due to the relatively remote location, various bird species breed on the island, so the park administration was able to detect breeding goosander , belt fisherman and Wilson snipe there . There are also various mammals, amphibians and reptiles.

activities

Many paddlers use the small island for a stopover from West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park; However, this is limited to the bright time of the day, because it is a so-called day use area .

The park has no spaces for tents or the like and only has simple sanitary facilities.
