Memphis Street Railway Company

The Memphis Street Railway Company operated the Memphis tram, which was closed in 1947, from 1895. From 1931 to 1960 it also maintained a trolleybus network.

history

The Memphis Street Railway Company was founded on March 28, 1895 by merging the Citizens Street Railroad, the City & Suburban Railway, the East End Street Railway, the Memphis & Raleigh Springs Railroad and other operations. The Memphis & Lake View Railway, the successor to the Memphis Interurban Company, was a subsidiary of the company. This operated with four closed vehicles the 10.83 mile long overland line to Lake View in the neighboring state of Mississippi .

in 1958 the company went out. It was succeeded by the Memphis Transit Company, which in turn became part of the publicly owned Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) in 1961.

Routes and lines

In 1911 the network was at its greatest extent of 51 miles of double-track and 26.5 miles of single-track lines. Up to 14 lines were operated, the longest running from Downtown to the Memphis National Cemetery near the suburb of Raleigh. From the 1930s onwards, the lines were gradually abandoned in favor of omnibus traffic.

Power was supplied via an overhead line using pantographs .

vehicles

In 1911 the company had 132 closed and 109 open vehicles as well as 69  semi-convertibles (closed or open tram cars). The vehicles were usually traveling individually, sidecar traffic existed on the train to Lake View.

trolleybus

The trolleybuses gradually replaced the trams from 1931. In 1960 the last trolleybus line was discontinued in favor of diesel buses .
