Menhir da Cabeça do Rochedo
The menhir da Cabeça do Rochedo is an obelisk-like menhir made of limestone . It stands 500 m west of the N120 next to a quarry, on a hill north of the hamlet of Portelas and the city of Lagos in the municipality of Bensafrim , in the Algarve in Portugal .
The early Neolithic menhir is of considerable weight and size and has a decorative spiral-shaped engraving, which, however, can hardly be recognized. It is damaged in the middle by a large crack and broken off diagonally at the top.
The 259 menhirs of the Algarve are mainly characterized by their morphology, decoration and the archaeological context. They usually have a pallic , sub-conical or cylindrical shape and are concentrated in the far west of the province, which has few megalithic structures.
