Menhir of São Palo de Antas

The menhir of São Palo de Antas (also Säo Paio de Antas ) is a cultural monument in northwest Portugal . It was only discovered in 1976.
The stone stands on a small hill overgrown with young pines in the southern part of the village of Monte , about 28 kilometers (as the crow flies) west-northwest of the district capital Braga . About 200 meters south of the menhir is the parish church of Igreja São Paio de Antas .
The menhir protrudes 1.65 m from the ground and is about 0.35 m underground. According to the geological map, it is on a slate - greywacke formation . It consists of a non-porphyry granite of medium grain size common in the area . An excavation in the immediate vicinity has not revealed any further information or dating material. There is / was a Bronze Age necropolis nearby .
