Menhir by Uyea Breck

The menhir of Uyea Breck is near the East Road, a side road of the B9084 on Uyeasound, east of Clivocast a small settlement in the municipality of Uyeasound , in the south of the island of Unst , the northernmost inhabited island of the Scottish Shetland Islands . The stone is listed as a Scheduled Monument .

The menhir ( English standing stone ) of Uyea Breck is a slate monolith inclined to the northeast, almost 3.0 m high , which is about 0.85 m wide at the base, where it is supported by a pack of small stones. Its broadside is oriented roughly north-south. The stone is the more northerly and larger of the two neighboring Clivocast menhirs.

The Uyea Breck is supposed to mark the place where one of the sons of the Viking king Harald Harfager (852-933) (German Harald Schönhaar ) was killed around 900 AD. He is said to be buried in a tumulus in the southwest. According to other sources, the stone has been on the site for 4,000 years.
