The menhirs in the Thümmlitzwald are two prehistoric menhirs in the Thümmlitzwald near Grimma in the district of Leipzig . At 5 m, menhir II is the highest menhir in Saxony and one of the highest in Germany .

location

The two menhirs are located in the Thümmlitzwald southeast of Grimma . Menhir I was moved in front of a school under the name " Ernst-Thälmann- Stein" in GDR times, but was returned to its original location after German reunification . He stands there near a stream in a valley. Not far is the so-called "Lochstein", a medieval boundary stone . Menhir II is located near the highest elevation of the Thümmlitzwald. Right next to him is a natural slab of rock called "Teufelsstein".

description

Menhir I.

The menhir consists of lignite quartzite . It is irregularly shaped, plate-like and has a saddle-shaped tip. It has a height of 110 cm, a width of 100 cm and a depth of 40 cm. It has a chiseled P or F on one of the narrow sides.

Menhir II

The menhir consists of lignite quartzite. It is irregularly shaped and has a blunt tip that tapers to a point at the north corner, giving it the appearance of a bird's beak. The stone has a height of 500 cm, a width of 130 cm and a depth of 100 cm. When it was photographed by Waldtraut Schrickel in the 1950s, the menhir fell over and broke in two. In 1981 it was straightened up again and the two fragments were reconnected with concrete.
