Mental Ray (spelling: mental ray ) is a renderer developed by Mental Images GmbH and advertised and sold by Autodesk and Dassault Systèmes . The company was founded in Berlin in 1986 and was taken over by Nvidia in 2007 .

Among other things, the renderer is integrated into the 3D packages Maya , 3ds Max , Softimage and allows naturalistic-realistic, but also symbolized-unrealistic scenes such as comics to be calculated. Alongside RenderMan, it is one of the most frequently used renderers in the film industry . Mental Ray supported early on technologies such as global illumination (global illumination) and Final Gather . In films like Star Wars: Episode III and the Lord of the Rings trilogy , Mental Ray shows what it is capable of in collaboration with other programs and techniques ( post-production is very important here, i.e. color matching and much more, without the that Result would not be the same).

Supported technologies include global lighting , caustics , final gathering , ray tracing, and depth and motion blur.
