Merab (female first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merab ( מֵרַב merav ) is a female Hebrew given name .

Mention in the Bible

In the 1st book of Samuel , Merab is the name of Saul's older daughter .

Saul offers Merab David to the wedding ( 1 Sam 17.26  EU }). However, this refuses. It can be assumed that this is a "service marriage" and that David does not want to enter into such a subordinate relationship with Saul.

Merab finally marries Adriel from Mehola ( 1 Sam 18.19  EU ). In terms of textual criticism, it should be noted here that some text witnesses prove the defense of the children of Merab ( Mefiboschet / Meribaal and Armoni) by Rizpah ( 2 Sam 21.8  EU }) (e.g. Masoretic text ). However, some text witnesses give Michal as the mother (e.g. Septuagint ).
