The Mercado do Xipamanine (German market of Xipamanine ) is one of the largest and most famous markets in the Mozambican capital Maputo . It is located in the district of the same name in the Nlhamankulu district in the west of the city.

The Mercado do Xipamanine is one of the oldest and largest in the city. In addition to food, small animals and everyday goods, clothing - especially imported second-hand clothing from Europe - and fabrics ( capulana ) are sold there. The largest part of the market is taken up by small stalls and so-called "hawkers". Most of the fabric shops are located on the edge of the market (or main access road) on Rua dos Irmãos Roby . According to media reports, a good 8,000 traders sell goods on the market.

Since the end of the planned economy in the early 1990s and the improvement in economic relations with South Africa , the market has grown in size and importance. In the meantime, the market is perceived as "sprawling" and very chaotic, as all the streets towards the city center have been filled with hawkers and informal trade. This goes so far that the term “Xipamanização” (“Xipamanization”) means a massive increase in informal trade throughout the capital. Facilities on the market that used to upgrade the market, such as the Zundapi bar or the Olímpia cinema, are now closed and are also used as sales rooms or are empty. Fires also occur regularly, most recently in August 2015 when more than 30 shops burned down.

Due to the constant expansion of the market and the associated circumstances, the city administration - which officially operates the market - has repeatedly come under fire. In particular, the traffic chaos, hygiene and fire protection are criticized. The election program of FRELIMO Mayor David Simango for the local elections in 2013 included cleaning up all of the city's important markets, including the Mercado de Xipamanine, and setting up permanent stalls with a roof. According to media reports, the complete renovation and renewal of the market and the surrounding area will take at least ten years. According to the plan drawn up by the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and the UN Habitat program, around 90 million US dollars will be required. This includes, among other things, the construction of a four-story building including cooling facilities for fresh food.
