Mercan Dede Ensemble is a musical group that combines modern electronic elements with traditional Sufi spirituality. This group was founded in 1997 by the Turk Arkın Ilıcalı (* 1966), who now lives in Montréal ( Canada ) and works under the stage names Mercan Dede and DJ Arkin Allen . He himself says that he sees himself in the spirit of the Whirling Dervishes . Dede is a historical Turkish honorary designation for leading figures in dervish communities.

The Mercan Dede Ensemble combines traditional Sufi spirituality with modern electronic sounds, where oriental melodies meet techno sound, violin and percussion. Mercan Dede brings traditional musical instruments such as Ney (reed flute), Bendir (frame drum) and Zarp to his music project.
