Mercedes Benz (song)
Mercedes Benz is the title of an a cappella song that was recorded by Janis Joplin on October 1, 1970 for the album Pearl . The text in the first line ( Oh Lord, won't you buy me / a Mercedes Benz ) comes from Michael McClure . The rest of the song was composed and written by Joplin together with Bob Neuwirth . It was the last song that Joplin recorded before her death (October 4, 1970). According to Chris Neal, the song ironically takes up the belief that one can find salvation by buying high-quality consumer goods such as a Mercedes-Benz car .
