Pearl is the second studio album by Janis Joplin and her last formation The Full Tilt Boogie Band , which was released in January 1971, three months after Joplin's death, on Columbia Records .
background
After Joplin left Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1968 , she recorded her first solo album, I Got Dem Ol 'Kozmic Blues Again Mama! In June 1969 ! on. The successor Pearl was recorded in Hollywood between September and October 1970 . Joplin was accompanied in the studio by the Full Tilt Boogie Band , whose members were John Till, Richard Bell, Clark Pierson, Brad Campbell and Ken Pearson. Pearl is the last Joplin album on which the singer with the distinctive voice took part. She died of a heroin overdose on October 4, 1970 . The album cover shows a photo of Joplin, which was taken by Barry Feinstein . The cover was designed by Tom Wilkes . Pearl was number 1 on the Billboard 200 for nine weeks in the US . With over 4 million units sold, it was certified four times platinum status in 2000 . Pearl also reached the top of the album charts in Australia, Canada, Norway and the Netherlands .

The album received very positive reviews. Furthermore occupied Pearl Square 125 of the 500 best albums of all time the music magazine Rolling Stone . The song Me and Bobby McGee reached number 148 of the 500 best songs of all time . The New Musical Express voted it 207th of the 500 best albums of all time. Pearl is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die . The single, Me and Bobby McGee , was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, and the album followed in 2010. National Public Radio voted Pearl # 8 of the 150 Best Albums Made by Women.

- In 1972 Pearl came onto the market on LP as a quadraphonic version with four audio channels .
- The album was first released on CD in 1984.
- In 2016, the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Pearl released the "Original Master Recording" series on SACD.
