Nick Gravenites (actually: Nicholas George Gravenites ) (born October 2, 1938 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American singer , songwriter and music producer . He became known as a member of bands like Electric Flag and Big Brother and the Holding Company .

biography

Nick Gravenites experienced the Chicago blues scene as a student from 1956 . His friends included Charlie Musselwhite , Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield , and he learned from blues greats like Muddy Waters , Buddy Guy and Howlin 'Wolf .

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band recorded the Gravenites song Born in Chicago in 1965 on their first album . In Bloomfield's band Electric Flag , Gravenites was singer and songwriter from 1967. In 1968 he produced the first album by the Quicksilver Messenger Service group . In 1969 he released his first solo album, My Laboratories .

From 1969 to 1972, Gravenites was a member of Big Brother And The Holding Company . He then wrote film music and worked with musicians such as Huey Lewis and John Cipollina . At times he was on the road with his band Nick Gravenites Blues .
