Mercurios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mercurios was a Nubian king of the Empire of Makuria who ruled from 696 until after 710 .

Mercurios is known from various sources. In the annals of the Coptic Patriarchs , he is referred to as the new Constantine , which suggests that he had a special position in the introduction of Christianity into Nubia. He is also mentioned in two contemporary inscriptions. In one of the Cathedral of Faras , he may even appear as its builder. The inscription is dated to the year 707 and also testifies to the 11th year of the reign. It is also mentioned on the foundation stone of Taifa Church, dated 710 .

The office of Eparchen is attested for the first time under Mercurios . It has been assumed that under the rulers Makuria and Nobatia were united to one country, since Nobatia no longer appears as an independent state since about his reign.
