Meritxell is a small town in the Principality of Andorra , it belongs to the parish of Soldeu . In 2013 the place had 55 inhabitants. The place is located on the northern side of the Valira river at an altitude of around 1500 meters on the CG-2 road from Andorra la Vella via the Port d'Envalira into the Ariège Valley in France.

Origin of name

According to the records of the philologist Joan Coromines , the name "Meritxell" is a diminutive of Merig and comes from the Latin ante meridiem , German: morning. This term meritxell was used by the herdsmen in Andorra to go to a pasture before the sun disappeared behind the mountains.
