Merkaere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The merkaere is a typical, recurring figure in German minnesang . A Merkaere spies after lovers, reveals secret liaisons, tries to prevent rendezvous and through cunning and slander to cool the love of the other.

The figure of the merkaere corresponds to that of the lukewarm in French trobadord poetry .

The Middle High German term merkaere corresponds etymologically to the New High German word Merker and is translated as Merker or Aufpasser when translating poetry into today's German . In a scientific context, the Middle High German term usually remains untranslated.
