from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meryem Xan (* 1904 in Dêrgol, Şırnak Province , Ottoman Empire ; † 1949 in Baghdad , Iraq ) was a Kurdish singer ( Dengbêj ).

Meryem Xan came from the village of Dêrgol in the extreme southeast of Turkey on the Syrian and Iraqi borders in the historical Botan region . She is considered to be one of the few classical female Dengbêj in an otherwise male-dominated Kurdish music scene in the first half of the 20th century. Her songs, of which over 200 are known, were mainly distributed through Radio Baghdad, which was founded in 1939. After the First World War, Xan first went to Syria until she went to Zaxo in Northern Iraq in 1924 . After a short stopover in Mosul in 1936 , she moved to live with relatives in Baghdad . She worked for Radio Baghdad for many years, where she met many other Kurdish artists. In addition to her own songs, Xan collected folk songs, which she then performed on the radio. In 1949 she died of complications from kidney disease and was buried in Baghdad.
