Merzvieh

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merzvieh , also Brackvieh (from Brack , Low German Brak ), are farm animals unsuitable for animal breeding due to age, poor performance, gender, illness or other errors , which are therefore marshered in the context of so-called Merzung (separated out as unsuitable for breeding or use, i.e. killed) become. Merzen is a now outdated agricultural word, the meaning of which has been transferred to the word eradicate as one of several meanings .

The term comes from the 16th century from the field of sheep breeding. There, before winter or in March, the animals that appeared unsuitable for further breeding were removed from the herd. These animals were then sold, slaughtered or fed fat for slaughter in the pasture. The origin of the word itself, however, is unclear. While the Duden refers to the fact that eradication could possibly have something to do with March because the animals were separated annually at this time, Herder's lexicon refers to an origin of murzen, which means to cut. In the ennobling , the reference to March is questioned on the grounds that the Merzen mainly happens in autumn and, among other things, a possible reference to the Greek μειρω, I separate, pointed out.
