Mesofila limnetica is a type of heterotrophic ameboflagellate that belongs to the Cercozoa andformsits own family Mesofilidae . It lives in fresh water and feeds on bacteria.

features

They are small, heterotrophic ameboflagellates with two flagella . They have numerous, heavily branched filopodia that do not protrude three-dimensionally, but lie against the substrate. Filopodia and flagella can appear together or separately.

The amoeboid cells are round to polygonal with an uneven surface. They are 9 to 14 micrometers in diameter. The cell nucleus sits centrally and takes up about a quarter of the cell diameter and has a conspicuous nucleolus . The filopodia extend from all sides of the cell and are up to 10 times as long as the cell diameter. The amoeboid form is immobile.

The flagellate stage is egg-shaped with a length of around 8 micrometers and has two flagella: the rear one is dragged along and is 2 to 2.5 times as long as the cell. The front flagellum is half to once as long as the body and beats vigorously. The cells slide forward on the substrate, with the thicker rear end often raised from the ground. The flagellate can also move about by swimming.

Round , smooth cysts about ten micrometers in diameter are formed.

Systematics

Mesofila limnetica is a basal group in one of the two large clades that make up the class Granofilosea . It is placed in its own family Mesofilidae.
