Metábasis eis állo génos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As metabasis ice Allo génos (gr. Μετάβασις εἰς ἄλλο γένος , literally. Switching to a different genus ) or assault to a different area means a unangezeigte shift in the meaning of a term by changing the genre, refers in its context, the term to something concrete .

The expression originally comes from the Analytica posteriora by Aristotle :

" Οὐκ ἄρα ἔστιν ἐξ ἄλλου γένους μεταβάντα δεῖξαι, οἷον τὸ γεωμετρικὸν ἀριθμητικῆι.
(Consequently one must not extend into another area for the sake of a proof; for example, the geometric must not be proven by arithmetic theorems.) "

- Analytica posteriora : 1st book, chap. 7, 75a 38

Although arithmetic and geometry e.g. If some of the terms and expressions used are the same, the evidence from one area should not simply be transferred to the other, since the terms specify different objects depending on the area. The meta-base is also forbidden in Aristotelian physics :

" Ἀλλ 'ἐκεῖνο μὲν δῆλον, ὡς οὐκ (268b.) Ἔστιν εἰς ἄλλο γένος μετάβασις, ὥσπερ ἐκ μήκους εας ες εἐφε ενε,
however, cannot go beyond the body we have passed from the line to the surface and from the surface to the body.) "

- De caelo : 1st book, chap. 1, 268b 1ff

Where the meta-base is not explicitly made as an analogy , it leads to a sudden leap in a line of argument or argument in which one incorrectly no longer treats the original object of the argument but a completely different one. But with this one commits the final mistake of fraud .

In more recent philosophy, Edmund Husserl used the term metabase to criticize psychologism . Husserl's work, in turn, is one of the starting points for the development of the theory of the category error in Gilbert Ryle .
