Mete İzgi

Mete İzgi (* 1963 in Eskişehir , Turkey ) is a German-Turkish writer and playwright.

life and work

İzgi grew up in Yalova near Istanbul, attended the military high school on the Bosporus and did military service as a radar operator in the Turkish submarine fleet until 1985. In September 1985 he came to Germany to start studying law at the University of Osnabrück; here he also did voluntary work in the Protestant student community and in the Erich Maria Remarque Society. İzgi completed his Magister Artium (MA) in literature and political science at the University of Osnabrück as well as the first and second state examinations for teaching at grammar schools in the subjects of German and politics. He worked on his doctorate until 2009 and has been a teacher since 2009.

As a writer, he first appeared in 1993 with texts on the literary telephone. At this time he also began to publish short stories in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung . From 1998 to 2000 he also wrote for the magazine Remarque-Aktuell . In 1994 he won a prize in the poster lyric competition Courage - Poems against violence organized by the literature office Westniedersachsen . İzgi worked on a novel Yeşilyurt - Between Two Fires (published 1997), for which he received an artist grant from the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture in 1995 and which was also brought to the stage as a play. In 1996 he received the artist prize of the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Stuttgart for another stage play - Father's Day . In the same year, he was awarded a prize at the VHS literature competition in Lower Saxony for a prose piece from the planned second novel, Last Harvest . In 1997, the Thuringian State Chancellery's youth theater award for the play The Hidden Mirror followed .

Mete İzgi lives in Osnabrück.
