Meteor station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A small observatory for observing bright falling stars and fireballs is called a meteor station. It monitors the starry sky through long-term exposure from a special camera . Here, the form star because of the Earth's rotation , as circular tracks from meteors , however, by straight line tracks .

There are a few dozen such meteorological stations in Europe, especially in Germany and the Czech Republic. The eight Czech stations together with a few others form the central European fireball network . Because if a meteor is recorded by several stations, its orbit, its origin and often its composition can be determined. If larger bodies do not burn up but fall onto the surface of the earth as meteorites , their location can often be localized.

The cameras that used to work with photographic films have mostly been converted to CCD sensors and remote control in recent years . In Croatia, simpler versions with video cameras are used.
