The Methodist Church Nigeria (MCN) is the United Methodist Church in Nigeria . She is a member of the World Methodist Council and the World Council of Churches .

history

The Methodist mission began in Nigeria in 1842. The first mission stations were in Badagry and Abeokuta , and from there the Church expanded to the west and north. With the arrival of the Primitive Methodist Church in 1893 on the island of Fernando Póo , located on the southern coast of Nigeria, southern Nigeria was also included in the Methodist mission. Both churches existed independently until they united after a conference in 1962. In 1976 the church adopted an episcopal constitution.

The highest decision-making body is the MCN Conference. The prelate who presides over her is Sunday Olatunji Makinde. The MCN is divided into 8 archdioceses, each headed by a bishop. 44 dioceses are subordinate to the archdioceses. According to the constitution, lay people take part in all decision-making meetings.

activities

The Church has been particularly involved in the education and health sectors. Several hospitals have been established and maintained by the MCN, including a clinic for lepers, three psychiatric clinics and a home for AIDS orphans. She established schools, kindergartens and theological seminaries. The establishment of a university is currently being prepared, the Wesley University of Science and Technology (WUSTO) in the state of Ondo .
