Metrolect

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In linguistics, Metrolect is a language variety spoken in an urban metropolitan region. As with Regiolekt , it is a spoken colloquial language , which, however, has been shaped more strongly by waves of immigrants in its history. Old dialectal substrates are not only less numerous, but have also mixed more strongly with influences from more distant languages.

For example, Berlinic as well as Ruhr German is an urban mix of languages that is not only of regional origin, but is also the result of a mix of dialects from different origins. In Berlin, the influences of Low German and Dutch , Yiddish and French as well as Polish and Silesian are particularly noteworthy. The last two have also had a strong impact on Ruhr German, but much later.

A Metrolect often develops from one or more sociolects , since when it comes into being, often only certain population groups speak the developing Metrolect, while other, more conservative-speaking social groups only take up and care for it in the course of later generations.

Much more strongly than the regional or even an urban ect , a metro ect forms a center of linguistic change and its innovations have an impact on the language development of the surrounding area.
