The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia ( MPDC for short ) in Washington, DC is one of the 10 largest urban police departments in the United States . Its jurisdiction extends over the District of Columbia, although numerous objects in the federal capital are protected by various federal police forces (e.g. United States Capitol Police , United States Park Police , United States Secret Service Police, etc.).

MPDC was founded in 1861 and today employs around 3800 police officers and 600 other employees. The agency has been headed by Chief Peter Newsham since 2017 .
