Gert Wiescher (born July 26, 1944 in Braunsbach am Kocher) is a German graphic artist , typographer , author and type designer . His Bodoni Classic fonts are best known. He designed many new fonts and created an almost complete redesign of the original Bodoni fonts. Typographers consider his Bodoni Classic to be the most faithful Bodoni.

Life

Wiescher studied graphics at the University of the Arts in Berlin and financed his studies with plaster painting and portrait drawing. At the age of 14 he had already earned his life in Paris - where he went on the chance to study art - by drawing portraits. While painting plasters, he met Erik Spiekermann , who infected him with the typography bacillus. After two years he broke off his studies, which had been disturbed by the demonstrations and strikes in 1968. His first marriage broke up. He moved to Barcelona, where he designed the OECD pavilion for Harden & Bombelli for the 1970 Osaka World's Fair. In 1972 he moved to Johannesburg and worked there as an art director for Gray and Young Advertising . In 1975, while on vacation in Munich, Dorland-Werbung made him a good offer and he returned to Germany. A short time later he moved to Herrwerth & Partner , where he played a key role in the introduction of IKEA into the German market. In 1977 he became a partner in the Lauenstein und Partner agency , which mainly looked after retail customers. In 1982 he started his own design office and looked after customers from the publishing industry - including Markt & Technik , Systhema, Langen-Müller-Herbig - as well as IT companies House of Computers and Filenet . He also designed the Apple Computer publications Apple-Age and Apple-LIVE .

With the first Apple Macintosh, he also began digitizing fonts for his own use. This gradually resulted in a small font collection, which he first marketed through Erik Spiekermann's FontShop . He suggested to FontShop to design a version of the Bodoni fonts that should be as close as possible to the original. The Bodoni Classic family was born from this idea. Building on this work, he has designed almost 300 font families with well over 1000 styles to date. Wiescher is probably the most productive type designer in Germany.

His work included the redesign of the logo font for the evening newspaper (Evening News) and the design of a Cyrillic Bodoni for VOGUE Moscow (Bodoni-Classic.Cyrillic). During his work as art director, he received several awards for advertising film concepts (including Berliner-Klappe).

Wiescher's font "Red Tape" has been hanging since March 2012 in the permanent exhibition "Character Books Networks: From Cuneiform to Binary Code" of the German National Library in the German Museum of Books and Writing in Leipzig.

Gert Wiescher has two sons.
