The port of Mevagissey

Mevagissey ( Cornish : Lannvorek ) is a large English fishing village on the south coast of the county of Cornwall . It is about 6 miles south of St Austell in Mevagissey Bay . Although fishing is still an important source of income, tourism has become Mevagissey's main source of income in recent years .

Mevagissey is located in a small valley that opens east to the English Channel . The old town center is characterized by its narrow, picturesque streets and the old port. These form the main attraction for tourism. Other attractions are the botanical garden The Lost Gardens of Heligan, west of Mevagissey, and a model railway exhibition with more than 2000 exhibits.

The Mevagissey Museum is located in a building built in 1745 as a shipyard for smugglers' vehicles . It provides an insight into everyday life in earlier times. Among other things, historical photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as various exhibits from the household, agriculture, fishing and military sectors are shown. (Open from Easter to the end of October.)

This and that

  • The name Mevagissey goes back to the original place name St. Meva and St. Issey , which was first mentioned in 1313. Archaeological finds from the Bronze Age indicate, however, that human settlements existed in Mevagissey earlier.
  • A small park in Mevagissey is popularly called "Hitler's Walk" ( Hitler's walk ). It was named after a parish council from the 1930s, who got its nickname after the dictator because he paced and inspected the boats moored in the harbor in an exaggeratedly devoted manner.
