The Mevlana Mosque is an Islamic sacred building in the north Hessian city of Kassel . It is located on Mattenbergstrasse in the Oberzwehren district . The official name of the associated community is DITIB Turkish-Islamic Community in Kassel-Mattenberg e. V. The association was founded in 1983 and today, with almost 300 members, is one of the largest Islamic associations in Northern Hesse.

history

In the early 1980s, the newly founded Islamic community on Mattenberg acquired 4878 m² of land. In their building stock there was a lightweight hall, which was built in 1944 and used as a car repair shop and paint shop until 1983. This was then renovated and adapted to the religious and social requirements of the community. Due to the deficiencies in the building stock and the growing number of members and needs of the community, the association decided in the 1990s to build a new mosque .

Conception

The project was developed and managed by the architects Abdurrahman Yüksel and Salim Yüksel in cooperation with the University of Kassel and the city administration of Kassel between 1997 and 2010.

The objective is the modern interpretation of a traditional Islamic foundation (Külliye). The house of prayer forms the central building of the new complex, while the surrounding outbuildings fulfill numerous social, charitable, academic and commercial functions. These should both sustainably promote the intercultural dialogue in the district and guarantee the spiritual and economic sustainability of the community in the long term.

The architectural as well as urban and landscape planning implementation of the building project consists of four project phases. The focus is on the first construction phase, the mosque including its minaret. In the second and third phases, the old existing buildings on the property will be gradually demolished and supplemented by the extension buildings of the foundation institution. In the last phase, the interior courtyard and the forecourt are designed. In March 2001, the preliminary construction request for the meeting center was approved by the city of Kassel.

The approval of the building application for the first project section, the mosque including its minaret, and the laying of the foundation stone took place in August 2008. The mosque was opened on May 18, 2014.

meaning

The development of an intercultural and interreligious meeting place in the form of a traditional foundation is taking place in this form for the first time in Germany. By means of complex capital management strategies, the investments for the new building, your future operating resources and charitable expenses are to be guaranteed. The aim of planning new organizational structures in the community is to achieve sustainable optimization of future cooperation with politics, society and the media.

The initiator and long-time sponsor of the Abdurrahman Yüksel project was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor of the City of Kassel on May 20, 2011.
