Miami Manatees (Canadian Football)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Miami Manatees were a planned Canadian football team from Miami , Florida that was to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from the 1996 season . Due to the CFL's withdrawal from the United States in early 1996, the Manatees never started playing.

history

Despite already established competition in Miami with the NFL team Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes of the University of Miami in college football , a group of investors intended to bring an expansion team from CFL to Miami. In the course of the negotiations, however, the option to relocate the Las Vegas Posse franchise to Miami was favored. On May 17, 1995, real estate investor Bruce J. Frey also acquired the franchise rights for 1.45 million US dollars. Frey commented on the acquisition:

"What this does is increase the odds that we'll get a team from about 65 percent to more like 90 percent."

"That increases the chances that we will get a team from around 65 percent to more than 90 percent."

- Bruce J. Frey

In the spring of 1996, however, the CFL announced to give up the US expansion and to dissolve all teams in the USA. As a result, all plans for the manatees were discarded.

Logo and uniform

The logo showed a manatee holding a football in front of a bowl with the sun or an exploding fireworks coming out. The uniforms were orange and black.
