career

Abel, the attacker had come to Fortuna Cologne from Blau-Weiß Köln, played two rounds with SC in the 2nd League West from 1951 to 1953. In his second season, 1951/52, he scored 21 goals in 26 league games and, together with Willi Koll from Duisburger SpV, was the top scorer in the 2nd League West Group 2. For the round 1952/53, the striker moved to the relegated league Rheydter SpV. Under coach Hennes Weisweiler the black and whites reached by the Jahn Stadium on the north road with 43:17 points behind VfL Bochum, the runner-up and the immediate Oberliga return. Abel scored ten goals alongside the most successful goalscorer, Franz Alexius (24 goals).

Abel and colleagues started in the 1953/54 league round on August 9, 1953 with a 2-2 home draw against Alemannia Aachen, where he formed the right wing with Alexius in front of 25,000 spectators on the right wing. The first away game in the league was won 3-2 on August 23 against STV Horst-Emscher. Abel scored his first goal in the league. The derby against Borussia Munich Gladbach followed on August 30th. In front of 35,000 spectators, BMG prevailed 2: 1; the interim 1: 1 in the 61st minute by Abel was not enough for the hosts to win points. After the first half of the season, the “Spö” came in 13th with 12:18 points. When the round ended on April 11, 1954 with a final 3-2 home win against Preußen Münster, Rheydt occupied 15th place in the table with 20:40 points and thus rose with the Emscher "Hussars" in the 2nd League West. With 4:26 points each, the two relegated teams had missed the league in the away games. Abel had scored nine goals in 29 missions, leading the black and whites' internal scorers list. The departure of amateur national player Alfred Post at the end of 1953 had also contributed to the weakening of the team.

With 15 league games and four goals for Rheydter SpV, Michael Abel's high-class playing career ended after the 1954/55 season in the 2nd League West.
