Michael Brandt (art historian)

Michael Brandt (* 1948 in Hildesheim ) is a German art historian and author of numerous monographs and essays on the description and interpretation of sacred works of art.

Life

Michael Brandt attended the humanistic  high school Josephinum in Hildesheim and studied German, catholic in Münster and Trier. Theology, philosophy, education and art history. After the first state examination and a legal clerkship at the commercial vocational schools in Trier , he passed the assessor examination in 1977 in the subjects of German and Catholic religion. He then moved to the Technical University of Braunschweig to study art history for a doctorate. In 1981 he was employed by the Diocese of Hildesheim as curator of the church's monument preservation and curator of the diocesan museum. In 1986 Brandt received his doctorate from the Technical University of Braunschweig with the thesis on "Studies on Hildesheim enamel art of the 12th century". In 1993 he was appointed director of the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum , from May 1997 to December 2000 additionally on behalf of Dt. Bishops' conference for the establishment and management of the Catholic office for the World Exhibition Expo 2000 (Christ pavilion). After teaching art history, he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Hildesheim . In 2015 he was retired as director of the Cathedral Museum.
