He completed his studies at the Institut libre d'étude des relations internationales (ILERI), from which he graduated with a diploma in international law.

From 1976 he was a member of the neo-Gaullist party Rassemblement pour la République (RPR), which was led by Jacques Chirac . From 1989 to 2005 he was mayor of Valréas. From 1992 to 2001 Mariani was also a member of the General Council of the Département Vaucluse , from 1992 to 1998 its vice-president. From 1993 to 2010 he was a member of the National Assembly , where he represented a constituency of the Vaucluse. In 2002, the RPR merged with the center-right rallying party Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP). In September 2002 Mariani traveled to Iraq together with two other UMP MPs at the invitation of a French lobby organization . The French Foreign Ministry disapproved of this trip.

From 2004 Mariani was also a member of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur . In the 2010 regional elections he was the top candidate for the UMP and its allies, but was defeated by the socialist candidate Michel Vauzelle with 33 to 44 percent in the second ballot . Mariani was a member of the regional council as an opposition representative until 2015. Together with other members of the right wing of the UMP (including Brigitte Barèges , Jean-Paul Garraud , Christian Vanneste ), he founded the La Droite populaire association in July 2010 , which advocates a hard line in security and immigration policy, but initially as an internal party Current in the conservative UMP remained. In the Fillon III cabinet , Mariani was State Secretary for Transport in the Environment, Transport and Construction Ministry from November 2010 (under Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet ). In June 2011, his position was upgraded to Assistant Minister , he held the office until the change of government in May 2012.

Mariani has been one of the two presidents of the Association Dialogue franco-russe since 2012 . From 2013 to 2014 Mariani was Vice Chairman of the UMP. La Droite populaire organized itself in November 2014 as a political association that is also open to non-UMP members. A month later, Nicolas Sarkozy appointed Mariani as the national secretary of the UMP with responsibility for the French abroad. In June 2015 he resigned from the leadership of the party, which had since been renamed Les Républicains . The accusation that he was approaching the right-wing extremist front nationally was rejected as "ridiculous" the following month. Mariani traveled five times to the civil war country of Syria between 2015 and 2017 . There he met President Bashar al-Assad , although France has not had diplomatic relations with his government since 2012. Mariani questioned the Assad regime's responsibility for the Khan Sheikhun poison gas attack .

In the run-up to the 2019 European elections , Mariani - like Jean-Paul Garraud - resigned from Les Républicains and ran for third place on the list of the National Rassemblement of Marine Le Pen (the successor party to the National Front), but without joining the party.
