Christian Vanneste (born July 14, 1947 in Tourcoing , Département Nord ) is a French politician ( RPR , UMP , RPF , La Droite libre ).

Life and political career

Vanneste comes from a Catholic and anti - communist family. As a youth, he spoke out in favor of continuing French rule in Algeria . He studied philosophy at the humanities faculty at Lille University . During the student unrest in May 1968 , he supported the government of General de Gaulle and joined the Gaullist youth organization Union des jeunes pour le progrès . He then taught philosophy at the private (Catholic) business school in Tourcoing and was its deputy director from 1976.

In 1977 he joined the Gaullist Rassemblement pour la République (RPR). From 1983 to 2008 he was a non-stop member of the Tourcoing City Council, and from 2001 to 2008 of the Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine Council . From 1986 to 2002 he also held a seat on the regional council of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, which he had to give up after his election to the National Assembly due to a law on multiple mandates.

Vanneste was a member of the French National Assembly from March 1993 to April 1997 and again from June 2002 to June 2012 .

Vanneste is an advocate of the death penalty for terrorists, and in April 2004 he was a co-signer of a corresponding bill. In November 2007, he presented a proposal to reduce license fees. Vaneste repeatedly attracted attention for homophobic statements in the French media. From 2012 to 2015 Vanneste was chairman of the RPF, then he founded the party La Droite libre ("the free right"). In the 2017 presidential election , he called for the election of Marine Le Pen from the far-right National Front .
