Michael John Brougham, 5th Baron Brougham and Vaux CBE (* 2. August 1938 ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and Peer .

life and career

Brougham was born to Victor Brougham, 4th Baron Brougham and Vaux , and Jean Follet. He attended Lycée Jaccard in Pully, Switzerland, Millfield School in Street, Somerset , and the Northampton Institute of Agriculture in Northamptonshire .

On June 20, 1967, Brougham inherited his father's title. Since 1993 he has been Deputy Chair of Committees with one interruption in 1997 . In 1995 he also became Deputy Speaker . Since 1996 he has been chairman of the European Secure Vehicle Alliance Group . From 1998 to 2002 he was vice chairman of the Association of Conservative Peers , since 2003 he has held this office again. In addition, he is a member, sometimes also vice-chairman, of several working groups in the House of Lords.

He was elected by the Hereditary Peers in 1999 and was thus able to keep his seat under the House of Lords Act 1999 .

family

Brougham was married to Olivia Susan Gray since July 20, 1963. The couple divorced in 1967; the former wife died in 1986. They have a daughter, Henrietta Louise Brougham (* 1965). He married Catherine Jill Gulliver on January 17, 1969. From the marriage comes a son, Charles William Brougham (* 1971), who is also the heir to the title. This marriage was divorced on December 9, 1981.

Honors

Brougham was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1995.
