Michael Clanchy

Michael Thomas Clanchy (born November 28, 1936 ) is a British medieval historian. He was a professor at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of London .

Clanchy studied at the University of Oxford (Bachelor of Merton College 1959) and received his PhD from the University of Reading in 1966 . 1964 to 1985 he was professor at the University of Glasgow and then at the University of London.

It deals with the history of law, administration and political history in the Middle Ages of England (especially the 12th and 13th centuries) and is known for several books, such as a book on the development of written culture in England in the early Middle Ages (From Memory to Written Record) and Abälard . In the 1990s he held interdisciplinary seminars on written culture at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of London, the Warburg Institute and University College London.

He has been married since 1963 and has a son and a daughter. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society (1966).
