Michael Corballis

Michael Charles Corballis (born June 10, 1936 in Marton ) is a New Zealand-Canadian psychologist and author. Corballis is Professor Emeritus at the University of Auckland's Department of Psychology , New Zealand . His research fields are cognitive brain research, visual perception, attention, memory and the origin of language.

Training and research

Corballis studied mathematics (Master in 1959) and Psychology (Master in 1962) at the University of New Zealand . He received his doctorate in psychology from McGill University in Montreal , where he taught in the Department of Psychology from 1968 to 1978. During this time, he was mainly concerned with cognitive brain research, analyzing complex cognitive systems such as perception, attention and memory. In particular, he researched the differences between the hemispheres of the human brain (cerebral asymmetry). In 1978 he became professor of psychology at the University of Auckland . Of great international importance is his hypothesis that human language arose from signs (shown in his book: "From hand to mouth"). He is quoted very often in this context.
