Michael Gaitanides

Michael Gaitanides (* 1942 ) is a German economist. After holding a professorship at the University of Hamburg (1979–1981), since 1981 he has been Professor of Business Administration, in particular organizational theory, at the Helmut Schmidt University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg . Since then he has received several professorships with a similar dedication.

After completing a commercial apprenticeship at Siemens and studying business administration in Munich, he received his doctorate in 1973 with Louis Perridon at the University of Augsburg with a thesis on "Industrial work organization and technical development". In 1978 he completed his habilitation under Wolfgang H. Staehle and Heiner Müller-Merbach at the Technical University of Darmstadt with a thesis that was devoted to the methodological problems of implicit preliminary decisions in the construction and use of decision models.

His main research interests are in the field of " process management ". The process concept was first presented by him in 1983 with his book "Prozessorganisation" as an alternative design concept to function and product-oriented organization. The book, which has been published in the 3rd edition, deals with the development, approaches and programs of the management of business processes. It was not until ten years after the first edition was published that the idea of ​​process-oriented organizational design found worldwide distribution through the book "Reengineering the Corporation" by Hammer / Champy.

In addition to his scientific work, he was active in science management, for example as chairman of the scientific commission “Organization” in the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration. V. or as editor of the "Zeitschriftführung + Organization (zfo)".
