Michael Geißler (video artist)

Michael Geißler (* 1942 in Berlin ; † December 2003 in Berlin) was one of the first German video artists .

Life

After completing a business apprenticeship, he began to study commercial advertising at the Academy for Graphics, Printing and Advertising in Berlin. His one-year study at the dffb in 1967/68 in the subject of camera and directing was ended by forced de-registration after the Springer house was occupied. From 1975 he was the technical director of the video forum at the Berlin International Film Festival. He received a teaching position for alternative media work at the Institute for Journalism at the Free University of Berlin . From the mid-1980s he was employed at the Werkbund Archive, Museum for Everyday Culture, where he supervised the video installations. In total, he was involved in around 370 video productions that are now stored in the ZKM in Karlsruhe.

Geißler founded the video artist group VAM Future Kids in 1969 . He got involved in social projects such as alternative children's shops and was part of the group of roaming hash rebels . In May 2008, a volume of his stories and tales, Acid, Mao and I Ching, will be published posthumously . Memories of a Berlin hash rebel . Michael Geißler was represented with two works as a participant in Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 in the video department .
