In the tradition of conceptual art, Kress draws on its well-known ordering systems, such as writing, naming, symbols or linguistic attributes. On the other hand, he derives his motifs from popular contexts by developing reproducible variants from an isolated pattern, e.g. B. with scrolling the names of film stars (La Video) or for calligraphy lines in exercise books (ruling no.1 - standard extension, 1991). The relationship between individual elements results in a structure which, through repetition, develops norms and promises orientation. Kress draws attention to these structures again and again and finds amazingly simple picture solutions through new combinations, the norms vary without completely giving up them, which would be naive. The development of identity and order, as it is repeated over and over again, for example in the often convulsive practice of writing, he literally turns on its head by writing backwards (left-back-writing, 1990) or the transformation of calligraphic lines into lines of characters (standard extension) . The educational need for calligraphy mutates with Kress to a variation of the line pattern, to a beautiful but meaningless ornament. Rules that solidify into norms and develop their own alienating existence, detached from the meaningful context or use of things, are called into question.

Michael Kress is a member of the German Association of Artists .
